History of Pécs VI. - Industrialization - urbanization. Pécs in the era of dualism (1867-1918)

The volume that you are holding in your hands is the fourth part of a program that began three decades ago. This time, we have not followed the chronological order - after volume III, which discusses the Turkish period, we are publishing part VI, which presents the development of the city during the Dualism era. The reason is twofold: on the one hand, it is one of the most dynamic periods in the history of Pécs, which still has a significant impact on its future, during which the political institutional system, economy, society and cultural life of the city, which had grown by about three times, were radically transformed. It was then that a significant part of the buildings that still define the cityscape of Pécs were erected. This is also the reason why earlier researchers paid special attention to the half century between 1867 and 1918, and even before the works mentioned above, a series of books, studies and source publications discussed the various segments of contemporary life. Utilizing the results of all this and supplementing it with new basic research, the authors present a data-rich picture that also reveals the connections and the contemporary positions of Pécs within the country. The text of the book, which is also intended for a wide readership, is illustrated with a total of 340 color and black-and-white illustrations (contemporary photos, diagrams, graphs, drawings), 48 tables and 18 maps, providing the reader with an aesthetic experience in addition to intellectual values.
