European integration and / or opening up to the East

The aim of the book is to present the most important orientation dilemma of 21st century Turkey: whether to continue the clearly Euro-Atlantic policy of previous decades, following Western modernization, or to find an alternative path of development for itself. The Turkish Republic was a "torn country" that remained a Muslim in terms of its culture, but its legal and institutional system, as well as its economic and political aspirations, directed it towards another civilization, the European one. the current Turkish foreign policy intends the country to act as a regional power factor arising from its geostrategic position rather than as a bridge between East and West. To what extent is it even more realistic for the Turks to participate more closely in European integration? What alternatives can expanding relations with Russia or East Asia offer? Is neosmanism really characterizing the new system of relations with neighboring regions? In addition to examining developments in Turkey's domestic policy, the analysis seeks answers to these questions through a detailed review of political and economic external relations. Tamás Szigetvári is a political scientist-economist, associate professor of the Institute of International and Political Science of the Péter Pázmány Catholic University, and a senior researcher at the Institute of World Economy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
